Understanding How Grades Are Calculated
Your class grade is typically calculated using weighted averages. Each category of assignments (homework, tests, projects, etc.) has a weight that determines how much it contributes to your final grade.
Example Grade Calculation
Syllabus weights:
- Homework: 20%
- Quizzes: 15%
- Midterm: 25%
- Final Project: 15%
- Final Exam: 25%
Your scores:
- Homework: 92%
- Quizzes: 88%
- Midterm: 85%
- Final Project: 95%
- Final Exam: 82%
Calculation: (92 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.15) + (85 × 0.25) + (95 × 0.15) + (82 × 0.25)
= 18.4 + 13.2 + 21.25 + 14.25 + 20.5 = 87.6% (B+)

Tips for Improving Your Class Grade
Never Miss Homework
Homework is often easier than tests. Maximizing homework scores provides a buffer for lower test grades.
Focus on High-Weight Items
If your final exam is worth 30%, prioritize studying for it over a 5% quiz. Allocate study time based on weight.
Track Your Grades Regularly
Don't wait until the end of the semester. Use this calculator throughout the term to stay on track.
Ask About Extra Credit
Some teachers offer extra credit opportunities. These can help boost your grade without adding to the denominator.
