How to Calculate Your GPA

A complete step-by-step guide to understanding and calculating your Grade Point Average. Learn the formula, see examples, and master GPA calculations.

The GPA Formula

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality Points = Grade Point Value × Credit Hours for each course

Step-by-Step Guide to Calculating GPA

1

Convert letter grades to grade points

Use the standard 4.0 scale: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. For plus/minus grades, add or subtract 0.3 (A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.)

2

Multiply grade points by credit hours

For each course, multiply the grade point value by the number of credit hours. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = 3.0 × 4 = 12 quality points.

3

Sum all quality points

Add together all the quality points (grade points × credit hours) from all your courses.

4

Sum all credit hours

Add together the credit hours for all courses you're including in the calculation.

5

Divide total quality points by total credit hours

Your GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. Round to two decimal places.

Pro Tips for GPA Success

Focus on High-Credit Courses

A 4-credit course has twice the impact on your GPA as a 2-credit course. Prioritize doing well in courses with more credits.

Track Your GPA Regularly

Don't wait until the end of the semester. Calculate your GPA periodically so you can identify areas needing improvement.

Understand Your School's Scale

Some schools use different scales or don't include +/- grades. Check your institution's grading policy to calculate accurately.

Consider Grade Replacement

Many schools allow you to retake a course and replace the old grade. This can significantly improve your GPA if you received a low grade.
